This MISTRAS advanced system offers many advantages, the greatest of which are the financial benefit resulting from reduced bottle handling and a significant increase in inspection efficiency. After removal from the aircraft, a Halon 1301 sphere is recertified immediately and returned, significantly reducing inventory-related costs since Halon is never removed. Unlike traditional test methods, MISTRAS system requires no cutting open of the bottle, releasing of Halon, or subsequent rewelding, therefore eliminating the opportunity to introduce new flaws into the sphere, decreasing inspection time, and extending the useful life of the bottle, which is limited in the number of times it can be cut open.
